Our Top Nine Tips for Taking Care of Your Car This Winter

Now that winter's here, it's absolutely vital that you make sure to protect your vehicle -- and yourself -- from the less-than-hospitable weather. Since cars have become even more complex, it can be tough to determine exactly where to focus your energies; fortunately, the expert mechanics in our Service Center have compiled a set of tips to make it easy for you to survive the season without any problems.

  • Take time to make sure that all of your lights work properly, and are clear of ice and snow.
  • If any bulbs are burned out, replace them as soon as possible.
  • Check your wipers, and replace them if they're stiff or cracked.
  • Keep your washer fluid reservoir filled, since you're likely to use your wipers often.
  • If you know that an overnight storm is likely and you park outside, lifting your wipers will help keep them from freezing to the windshield.
  • Only use brushes and scrapers to remove ice and snow.
  • Consider switching to snow tires that are mounted on inexpensive steel rims; this allows you to deliver optimal traction in winter, and save your regular tires for the other three seasons.
  • Check your oil and other fluids regularly, and top them off when needed.
  • Carefully examine the battery, wiring and spark plugs. Extreme temperatures can do terrible things to a failing battery, so you'll want to make sure that yours is in optimal condition.
